CHARACTER NAME: Vicious
FANDOM: Cowboy Bebop
CANON: After the end of Real Folk Blues II
WHAT THEY LOST: Vicious' loss would be all memory of Mao Yenrai, who was a capo for the Red Dragon and (according to Spike) the man that took Vicious in and helped him become the man he is, and whom Vicious refers to as his mentor. While Mao doesn't feature heavily into the series itself, it's clear he's been an important part of his past. Vicious himself had Mao killed, and him losing memories of all of this has the potential to create interesting conflict between himself and the others who share his past, as well.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Taken in by Mao Yenrai, a capo from Tharsis' Red Dragon crime syndicate, Vicious came of age in a futuristic world of mafia violence, where loyalty was everything and problems could be solved with a well-placed bullet. Together with Spike Spiegel, Vicious helped the Red Dragon maintain its grip on Mars' underworld. Then Julia stepped in, and everything changed. While the exact details are murky, a rift opened between the partners, Spike trying to leave the syndicate with Julia, and Vicious determined not to let either of them go. In the end, though, both slipped through his grasp. Spike--believed dead by the syndicate--became a bounty hunter, while Julia went into hiding. Vicious departed Mars for a time to serve in the Titan war, a staging ground for different friendships and betrayals, before returning to Mars and the Red Dragons, where he began a bloody climb to the top, assassinating Mao for 'losing his fangs' and brokering a deal with a rival syndicate, a move that lured Spike back in, beginning a bloody cycle of revenge that culminated with Vicious' coup and subsequent murder of the syndicate's leaders, and a cataclysmic confrontation with his former friend.

As his name suggests, Vicious can be a cruel person, cold and calculating to the core. He is not, however, a man prone to excessive, needless violence. In fact, he is extremely laconic in nature, speaking rarely, employing only a minimum of movement and effort. This is not laziness, but instead a reflection of his deeply introverted nature. Behind all that silence, Vicious is always watching and planning. His betrayal of Mao Yenrai is proof that for Vicious, loyalty is not a given. It is something that must be earned and maintained, and failing to do so has dire consequences, even for those he has previously held in esteem. For while he is a reserved man, he is also one without remorse or mercy, and betrayal is met with swift and brutal punishment. For Vicious, there can be no compromise. The path of bloodthirsty ambition is the only path, and those who stray from it, or are lured away by softer emotions, deserve nothing more than his swift and brutal wrath.

While he can be provoked to sudden fits of violent rage, Vicious is more likely to manipulate things behind the scenes. This can best be seen in the way he manipulates the Van at the end of the series--using their own arrogance against them to set up a series of events which lead to his gaining control of the Red Dragons. He seems to posses a nihilistic view on life, and while superficially, his goal appears to be the acquisition of as much power as possible, it is also evident that this serves simply as motivation for him. In the series, when he has finally killed his way to the head of the Red Dragons, he chooses to throw it all away in order to finally settle his score with Spike man to man.

Whatever feelings of love or friendship Vicious may have are warped to a considerable degree. To be loved by him, or to have his friendship, is to be tangled in a distorted web of obsession. He lets very few get close to him, and those who do are forced to walk a very fine line--any betrayal, any action that might be mistaken for weakness, can land a person on the wrong side of the man's formidable wrath. For Vicious, there is nothing more abhorrent than weakness. He is an arrogant man, sure of himself, and refuses to serve anyone he feels is unworthy, regardless of their rank or power. This is one of his greatest weaknesses, for while others might be content to sit back silently and wait until they could earn a better position for themselves, Vicious makes no secret of his own disgust for those he feels have outlived their usefulness, even if he is disciplined enough to wait for the right time to strike. To cross Vicious is to face annihilation, sooner or later. In the series itself, there are very few who come into conflict with the man who do not eventually meet an untimely end.

ABILITIES: Vicious has no special abilities, though his involvement with the Red Dragon syndicate means he possesses a good deal of skill in armed and unarmed combat. He has been shown to use guns, throwing knives, and his katana with equal dexterity.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:

It was late, with few cars passing by on the streets that bookended this particular crumbling apartment block, the sounds of humanity muted now, hush broken only by the occasional sharp cry, sounds of pain and pleasure alike mingled in the dark of a Martian night.

Vicious had been waiting for awhile now. How long, he had not bothered to track. Time was immaterial to his purpose. He would wait, for as long as it took. His patience knew no end, when he had a purpose in mind. And this night, he had one very particular purpose in mind.

Waiting gave him time to think. As he lit another cigarette, he rolled the events around in his head. What, precisely had lead to this moment? When had it begun? Perhaps that particular moment was not the important one. What mattered, really, was the moment the two of them had passed the bounds of reason and order, had forgotten that he could, would notice what passed between them. The moment they had let feelings override the need for survival. The moment they had become soft enough to forget just what sort of game they were really playing here.

He might have forgiven them their transgressions, if not for that. Lately, he could taste the weakness in them. They were better than that, the both of them. They had forgotten their place.

From the street, he heard Julia laugh. He straightened up and dropped the cigarette, grinding it out on the iron of the staircase. A small, thin smile split his face as he waited for the pair to turn the corner. It was time to remind the two of them just what sort of beast they were dealing with.

FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: This is quite the interesting purgatory, isn't it? I wonder, just what sort of devils does a place like this place hold? Or perhaps I've been sent here to torment the angels instead.

That would be disappointing, wouldn't it? A beast belongs amongst his own kind, not trapped with the weak, forced to grow soft himself or perish in the process. No matter how grand the cage may be, it is only the illusion of freedom. A dream cannot last forever, as pleasant as it might be. Eventually, even the most determined of dreamers must be awakened from their slumber.

If that is my role, so be it.

INTENT: To mess with the wonderful Bebop cast in the game. :D ...but on a more serious note, I think it will be interesting to see what happens with a man like Vicious in a place where there is no real power to be had, and where he will be completely out of his element. He's a complex character, and I think Paradisa will provide the sort of variety that will allow a lot of exploration of that complexity.
